Fun & Engaging ActivitiesOur Basic Vocabulary Card Set includes all 26 of our basic vocabulary card packets in one set: 312 text-free picture cards with real photographs. Students learn the precise name of each picture through the three-period lesson, building spoken vocabulary before they read. The set is designed for Montessori primary classrooms, homeschools, English learners, and intervention settings.
Montessori language work begins with the student's own world, then widens. The packets move from familiar things, such as clothing, pets, and kitchen tools, to animals, plants, and musical instruments students may not see every day. With 26 topics on hand, the teacher can offer whichever packet matches a student's current interest. Topics are Amphibians, Around the House, Around Town, Birds, Butterflies, Clothing, Dogs, Farm Animals (Adult), Farm Animals (Juvenile), Fish, Fruit, Garden Flowers, Horses (Coat Colors), Insects, In the Kitchen, Mammals, Orchestral Musical Instruments, Pets, Popular Musical Instruments, Reptiles, Sports Equipment, Tools, Transportation, Utensils, Vegetables, and Wildflowers.
Because the cards have no printed words, pre-readers can focus on the photo and its name. Mixing packets opens up sorting by kind, from pets vs. transportation to fruit vs. vegetables.
Download a free reference sheet listing every photo in the set.
Choose the Cards plus Cloth Pouches option to add six of our medium cloth pouches, or add as many as you like separately. Six pouches let you display six packets at a time and rotate topics every week or so to keep the shelf fresh.
Created by a Montessori teacher. Eco-printed in our rural New England office.
Made in the USA. CPSIA compliant.

Interest drives learning. Montessori is a student-centered approach: the teacher observes what each student is curious about and offers materials that match. Young students are fascinated by the animals, plants, and everyday objects in their world, and with 26 topics, there is a packet for almost every interest. When they are interested in the topic, students will choose these cards again and again. Each time is more practice naming, discussing, and sorting. That practice builds vocabulary, part of the language comprehension side of reading in both Gough and Tunmer's (1986) simple view of reading and Scarborough's (2001) reading rope.
Keep a few packets on the shelf at a time and rotate them, choosing topics that match your students' interests. Spark curiosity by discussing where students have seen these things, such as fruit at the market or tools in a workshop. Then use the three-period lesson on a few cards at a time. Match cards to real objects when you have them. Once students know the names, invite them to sort. Try an easier contrast first, such as pets vs. transportation, then a more challenging one, such as amphibians vs. reptiles. Known cards also work well for I Spy sound games ("I spy something that begins with /b/"). When students want more possibilities with the same words, move onto our Matching Cards. When students are reading, move on to the matching 3-Part Reading Cards. When students are ready for more specialized vocabulary, introduce our Advanced Vocabulary Card Set for new topics.
Typically ages 3 and up. The cards work well for pre-readers, English learners, and students in intervention settings.
