Common Core
Once children start reading, they have a voracious appetite for the written word! But before they are ready for books, they need more experience with individual words. These cards help give them just that. Introduce these after the child has experience with the phonetic object box and Phonetic 3-part Cards. They read these alone or take turns with their friends. Encourage them to sound each word out silently before saying the word out loud. As an extension, show them how to use these cards to take "dictation." Guide one child to read the word card and the other to spell it with the movable alphabet. This work allows the child to naturally refine her own spelling abilities. Yes!
Our set contains 40 cards, each with one phonetically-spelled word written in pink and blue (the same color-coding used in the traditional movable alphabet). But don't put out all 40 cards at once. Instead, just put out 8 to 10 this week and then swap them out for 8 to 10 others in a week or two. This will keep your classroom full of magic and exciting new possibilities all while continuing to draw interest to reading.
After the children start reading these, introduce our fun Phonetic Activity Cards game.
