Spanish Land & Water 1 Book & Card Set

Reading comprehension draws on several strands working together, not just one skill in isolation (Scarborough, 2001). This bundle is built around that idea: the Vocabulary Cards build vocabulary knowledge, the 3-Part Cards build word-level recognition, the book builds background knowledge through real photos and definitions, and the Definition Cards build the language structures needed to reconstruct a definition's meaning. Moving through all four pieces gives a child practice in every strand, rather than vocabulary alone.

Step 1: Introduce the vocabulary cards in 3-period vocabulary lessons.

Step 2: Read the book together.

Step 3: When the child begins reading non-phonetic words, introduce the 3-Part Cards.

Step 4: Once the child is reading more fluently, invite them to read the book independently.

Step 5: Use the definition cards, vocabulary cards, and book for three activities.

1. Match the vocabulary card pictures to the full definition (stage 1), using the book as a control so the child can check their own work.
2. Repeat with the stage 2 cards (term and definition cut apart).
3. Repeat with the stage 3 cards (term, first-half definition, and second-half definition).

Typically PreK-K (ages 4 to 6) for the vocabulary cards, book, and 3-part cards and K-6 (ages 6-12) for the complete activity. The set is designed to grow with a child's reading fluency: start with the vocabulary cards and book at any age, then add the 3-Part Cards and Definition Cards as reading skills advance.
