Decoding is the process of translating printed letters into sounds and blending them into words — the core skill of the Word Recognition strand of Scarborough's Reading Rope. This kit gives PreK-2 students structured, self-correcting practice moving from simple CVC words to consonant blends, building toward independent, accurate reading. It follows the Letters & Sounds Phonics Kit.
What's Included:
- Teacher Curriculum/Lesson Plans — step-by-step guidance for classroom use.
- Phonetic 3-Part Cards, Level 1 — simple three-letter words with short vowels (five packets).
- Phonetic 3-Part Cards, Level 2 — longer words with consonant blends (five packets).
- Phonetic Word Cards — 40 phonetic words, consonants in pink and vowels in blue.
- Phonetic Activity Cards — 40 phonetic verbs for a movement-based reading game.
Add-on Cloth Pouches
- Add-on four cloth pouches and rotate your materials using the same pouch from week-to-week:
- Five pink 3-pocket pouches (for phonetic level 1)
- Five blue 3-pocket pouches (for phonetic level 2)
- Five long berry pink pouches (for phonetic word cards)
- Five small red pouches (for phonetic activity cards)
- Add-on 20 cloth pouches and have all of the materials on the shelf at one time:
- Five pink 3-pocket pouches (for phonetic level 1)
- Five blue 3-pocket pouches (for phonetic level 2)

How the kit builds skills:
- Step 1 — Students read Level 1 CVC words independently, matching each word to its photo and self-checking with the control card.
- Step 2 — Students move to Level 2 consonant-blend words using the same self-correcting process.
- Step 3 — Students read Phonetic Word Cards to themselves or to each other, using peer collaboration as a control of error.
- Step 4 — Students play a phonetic charades game with the Activity Cards: read the word, act it out, and check understanding against a peer's guess.
The self-correcting 3-part card design in steps 1 and 2 lets children identify and fix their own errors, building reading confidence without relying on teacher correction at every step.
What is the Science of Reading?
The Science of Reading is the interdisciplinary body of research — from cognitive psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience — explaining how children learn to read. It identifies two foundational components of skilled reading: language comprehension (understanding language) and word recognition (decoding), which lead towards reading comprehension (Gough & Tunmer, 1986).
What is Scarborough's Reading Rope?
Scarborough's Reading Rope is a model depicting skilled reading as several strands — including vocabulary, phonological awareness, and decoding — that weave together as a child develops literacy (Scarborough, 2001). The Phonetic Decoding Kit targets strands from both the Language Comprehension and Word Recognition sides of the rope.
What ages is this kit designed for?
Ages 3–9. This range aligns with Montessori's sensitive period for language, when children are especially receptive to vocabulary acquisition and the alphabetic code.
How is this kit Montessori-aligned?
These materials are found in most Montessori language albums; they use self-correcting, hands-on cards that isolate one skill at a time, allow independent work, and follow the concrete-to-abstract sequence Montessori education is built on.
