Letter-sound knowledge is the foundation of the Word Recognition strand of Scarborough's Reading Rope — the skills that let children crack the alphabetic code and begin decoding print. This Montessori kit takes children through phonemic awareness, letter-sound correspondence, and phonetic word-building in clear structured steps.

How this kit builds literacy skills:

Step 1: Phonemic Awareness

• Engage in playful "I Spy" sound games using classroom objects and picture cards (included), encouraging phoneme isolation ("I spy something that starts with /b/"). This builds auditory discrimination skills.
• Progressive game levels systematically develop skills to isolate beginning, middle, and ending sounds, gradually advancing to phoneme segmentation. These activities enhance phonological processing.
  

Step 2: Learn Letter-Sounds

• Use letter charts to introduce the key sound for each letter/digraph
• Use self-correcting 3-part cards to practice applying this new knowledge; match consonant, short vowel, and digraph sounds with corresponding pictures. The control of error built into the card design promotes independent learning.
  

Step 3: Practice Building Words

• Use the movable alphabets to practice phonetically building words. Can also be used for segmenting, blending, and substitution activities, promoting phonological awareness and pre-reading skills.
• Multiple movable letter/digraph tiles in the alphabets let students start phonetically building words without needing to cross out or erase.
