How do I learn more about neuroscience and Montessori?
Question:
I am personally very interested in getting a certification or training in Montessori Elementary Education and 6-12 Education. I have always wanted to know more about effective agency based education techniques.
Would you recommend getting an education focused neuroscience degree, a degree in Early Childhood Education and a Montessori certification, or another path?
My goals are to better lead in my school program and to train and support homeschool mothers on educating their children. So many mothers including me, get into motherhood with no knowledge of how children learn or how to respond to children. After 7 children, I still feel like I lack in discipline skills and gentle guidance techniques. So knowing how to correct a child and lead them to better choices is a top lesson I would like. I have had challenging children and easy children in our home. Knowing what yo fo for the very very strong willed child, would have been so helpful. So I would love a training on best discipline and guidance for a strong willed child to help anyone parent this type of child.
What programs do you recommend to improve and grow in this knowledge?
Thank you for sharing your videos and time!
Answer:
It's so nice to hear from you and learn about your journey. I'd recommend starting with the Neuroscience of Learning course offered through Harvard University Extension School. It's online for the spring semester or in-person for the summer. That should give you a good grounding in neuroscience and how it applies to education. Then, you can decide where best to go next.
Learning how to successfully guide children with consistent expectations, boundaries, wonder, and joy is a different kettle of fish. There are some books and courses on positive discipline that might help (I don't have personal experience with those). Going deeper into a Montessori certification would certainly be useful. You may want to visit the websites of some of the AMI teacher training centers to see what introductory courses they offer. An overview for the elementary age child might be helpful and then, again, you could decide if you want to go deeper and take the full training. I strongly advise you to stay with AMI teacher training programs/centers. They offer the authentic Montessori teachings.
Hope this helps and I wish you tremendous good fortune with all you are doing!
