Reading for Interest
Having someone hovering over us and telling us when we get something wrong is not terribly helpful! Neither is the process of waiting for someone else to tell us if we're right or wrong.
But we don't need a computer interface to give us self-correcting, instant feedback. We can use 3-part cards. These allow learners to work with the vocabulary they are learning, to see if they really understand what it means, and to have the opportunity to correct their own errors.
This is such a simple format that meets so many needs.
Use 3-part cards:
- When children just begin reading (see our Phonetic 3-Part Cards)
- When children are ready to read non-phonetic words but not quite ready for books (see classified 3-part cards listed below)
- To expand content knowledge and follow the learner's interest with Zoology 3-Part Cards and Parts of 3-Part cards

We also offer many of our classified 3-part reading cards as vocabulary and matching cards; these contain the same photos but in a slightly larger format and without the distraction of the written word. It is great to have all three sets in one classroom so that the 3-year olds (using vocabulary cards), 4-year-olds (using matching cards), and 5+ year-olds (using 3-part reading cards) can all be exploring the same topic--great for classroom community building!

Why 3-Part Cards Matter for Reading
Vocabulary knowledge is one of the two strands that weave into skilled reading, alongside word recognition (Scarborough, 2001). Once a child can decode, growing their store of labeled concepts is what turns sounding-out into comprehension (Gough & Tunmer, 1986). Classified 3-part cards build that vocabulary through repeated, self-correcting matching — the same kind of repeated exposure that helps children map printed words to their meanings automatically over time (Ehri, 2014). The built-in control of error also lets a child correct their own work immediately, so practice stays independent and consistent rather than dependent on an adult checking each answer.
What age are 3-part cards for?
Classified 3-part reading cards are designed for children who can already read simple words but aren't quite ready for full books — typically ages 5 and up. Younger children (ages 3-4) can use the same photo sets as vocabulary cards before they're reading independently.
What's the difference between 3-part reading cards, matching cards, and vocabulary cards?
All three use the same photographs. Vocabulary cards (no words) are for children who aren't reading yet. Matching cards pair two identical photos for younger classifiers. 3-part reading cards add a word label and a control card, so a child can read the word, match it to the photo, and self-check the answer.
Do I need the control cards to use these?
The control card (with photo and word together) isn't required, but it's what makes the activity self-correcting. Without it, a child needs an adult to check their word-to-photo matches instead of checking their own work. Control cards are included in all of our 3-part cards.
