SXSW Conference: I need your vote for Neuroscience Meets Mentoring

I need your help. I'm hoping to share the results of the mentoring research study I've been working on all year (with a team of incredible researchers, read more below) at the SXSW EDU conference this spring. That conference uses both a judging panel and audience votes to decide which speakers will be invited to present. So, I need your vote!

My proposal is titled Neuroscience Meets Mentoring: Rewiring Teacher [Burnout]. Please take a moment to vote for my panel proposal on the SXSWEDU Panel Picker.

Your vote can help us bring this vital discussion to a broader audience, benefiting educators everywhere.

Background on Teacher Burnout and the Research Study

Teachers across the country are leaving the field in droves. According to a survey conducted by the National Education Association (NEA), 55% of educators are now planning to leave the profession sooner than they had originally intended due to the ongoing challenges in education. The NEA survey also revealed that 90% of teachers report burnout as a serious issue, with 86% having noticed more educators leaving or retiring early in recent years. These alarming trends highlight the growing challenges in education, where teachers are increasingly feeling unsupported and overwhelmed (Jotkoff, 2022).

How can we help address this epidemic of teacher burnout? I've worked for the past year on a research study with Dr. Ann Epstein, Dr. Ian Becker, and doctoral candidates Heather Gerker and Nikki Conyers. We've been investigating the influence of an evidence-based teacher mentoring program on factors related to teacher burnout. We're just starting to analyze our results and they are incredibly exciting.

We're finding that mentoring communities can provide sustained support, genuine care, and real solutions for the day to day challenges teachers face. Teachers who were mentored had higher reports of measures of self-efficacy and self-efficacy is related to burnout.

We'll be presenting these results at conferences across the country this coming year and we hope SXSW EDU will be one of them!

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to humanizing education. Together, we can help each other and build stronger, more resilient school communities.
