Puzzle Words

"Puzzle words" is the Montessori term for high-frequency sight words that don't follow regular phonetic rules — words like "come," "only," and "very" that can't be fully sounded out using standard letter-sound patterns. This set of 40 fully-laminated cards is designed for the shelf, ready to rotate into use once children have experience with phonetic reading cards.

The Science of Reading cautions against teaching sight words as pure memorization, disconnected from phonics. Even irregular words carry partial phonetic information — most puzzle words follow the rules for part of the word, with only one sound or spelling pattern breaking the pattern (in "come," for example, the c and m sound out normally).

Encouraging children to sound out puzzle words, rather than simply memorizing their letters, supports orthographic mapping — the process by which words become permanently and automatically recognized in memory (Ehri, 2014). This connects sight word recognition and phonetic decoding as two parts of the same Word Recognition strand of Scarborough's Reading Rope (Scarborough, 2001), rather than two separate, disconnected skills.

How to use this material:

Display 8 to 10 words at a time in a decorative box, basket, or cloth pouch (sold separately). Rotate the cards to keep the work fresh and in active use. Choose the single-pouch option to rotate cards regulalry or the classroom pack (five pouches, 8 cards per pouch, 40 cards total) to have all the cards out at the same time.
