Building upon the foundational skills learned in the Phonetic Decoding Kit, this kit guides students through a carefully structured progression, starting with key sound digraphs (like ch, ee, oa, sh, th) and gradually moving to more advanced combinations and patterns (like silent e). The learning journey is carefully structured to ensure that foundational steps are mastered before moving on to the next. 

Self-Correcting

The self-correcting 3-part cards play a central role in this process, empowering students to work independently and at their own pace. The cards are designed so children can explore and experiment with digraphs and their related words, and check their own work without direct teacher intervention. This fosters a sense of self-reliance and confidence in their reading abilities.

Pattern Recognition

Building upon the skills in the Phonetic Decoding Kit which focused on phonetically regular words, this kit emphasizes developing a deep understanding of digraph patterns. Students move beyond simply reading words with digraphs, and instead begin to actively sort words by their digraph patterns, noticing recurring sound-spelling relationships and learning to predict how sounds and letters combine. This approach enhances pattern recognition skills so that students will be able to decode single and multi-syllable words more easily

With the Digraph Decoding Kit, your students will build upon their foundational skills to master the complexities of the English language, setting them on a path to becoming confident, lifelong readers. Step 1: Students choose any green packet (key sound digraphs) and independently read the words, match them to their photo, and find their own mistakes with the control card. Repeat until children have mastered all packets.

Step 2: Students choose any pine/dark green packet (other common digraphs) and read as in Step 1.

Step 3: Students choose any purple packet (combined digraphs) and read as in Step 1.

Step 4: Pairs of students choose one chart from the large green pouch (key sound digraph lists). They take turns reading the words to each other. Then they extend the work by playing dictation games where they try to correctly write down/spell the words the other child reads to them. The List acts as a built-in control of error so students can check their own work.

Step 5: Repeat step 4 for other charts. Build in a self-assessment by asking students to choose a chart they haven't read yet.

Step 6: Repeat as in Step 4 but choose one chart from the pine/dark green large ouch (common digraph lists).

Step 7: Repeat step 6 for other charts. Build in a self-assessment by asking students to choose a chart they haven't read yet.

There are enough materials in this kit for five students to work with you at the same time. Add in a self-assessment measure by allowing students to choose the packet they work with (you might say, "Everyone choose one purple pouch that you haven't done before.").
