Background knowledge is one of the strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope. Research consistently shows that our knowledge of the world around us is linked to stronger reading comprehension in the future. This Montessori kit gives preschoolers a broad, concrete introduction to the world through two core material sets, with optional add-on cloth pouches for elegant and organized daily classroom or home use.
What's included
Knowledge about the world significantly contributes to future literacy. Help children develop a broader understanding of life around the world and give them opportunities to verbally express their ideas with these materials.
- Geography Cards Series 1: Seven packets, one for each continent, each showing children in everyday life: at school, in a parade, fishing, at a market, and more. The same 10 themes are in each continent packet so you can directly compare how people shop, learn, and live around the world.
-
Fine Art Display Card Set/6: This bundle includes all six packets: World Art, American Art, and four packets of European Art
Add-on cloth pouches to beautifully display these cards so they are easy to use and keep organized:
- One x-large one-pocket pouch for fine art cards (teal)
- One set/7 x-large one-pocket cloth pouches for geography cards
Why background knowledge matters for reading
Scarborough's Reading Rope identifies background knowledge as one of the strands of Language Comprehension, alongside vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and language structures. Children who encounter a wide range of people, places, and ideas before they read build the schema they'll later draw on to comprehend text — well before formal literacy instruction begins.
What is the Science of Reading?
The Science of Reading is the interdisciplinary body of research — from cognitive psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience — explaining how children learn to read. It identifies two foundational components of skilled reading: language comprehension (understanding language) and word recognition (decoding), which lead towards reading comprehension (Gough & Tunmer, 1986).
What is Scarborough's Reading Rope?
Scarborough's Reading Rope is a model depicting skilled reading as several strands — including vocabulary, phonological awareness, and decoding — that weave together as a child develops literacy (Scarborough, 2001). The Background Knowledge Kit targets the Language Comprehension side of the rope.
What ages is this kit designed for?
Ages 3–7+. This range aligns with Montessori's sensitive period for language, when children are especially receptive to vocabulary acquisition and cultural influences.
How is this kit Montessori-aligned?
These materials are found in most Montessori language albums; they isolate one skill at a time, allow independent work, and follow the concrete-to-abstract sequence Montessori education is built on.
