Number and Operations in Base Ten

These static and dynamic (with carrying) equations encourage independent work with your base ten manipulatives. Use these to create visual equations. Layout the base ten materials on a large table just like the equation shows; addends on top. Then, slide them all together to create the sum. Guide the child to write down the equations and answers in their own math journal.

If the children aren't writing with precision yet, make your own Decimal Cards to help them focus on the base 10 system rather than the challenges they're having in writing numbers accurately.

A Note to Montessorians

Use these to encourage independent work with the golden beads or stamp game. For your initial addition presentation, use the enclosed equation master to handwrite your own equation. Then, introduce these prepared equations to give children problems they can solve independently.

A Note to Teachers

Once children have gained experienced with dynamic equations, make photocopies of the equation master (included) to guide them in making their own math problems,... the birth of true mathematicians! Move on to multiplication after addition (putting the same thing together so many times).
