Article: The Importance of Letter Naming Fluency

The Importance of Letter Naming Fluency

In our ongoing exploration of essential literacy skills, we focus on letter naming fluency—something that is always tested on benchmark assessments. When children master letter naming fluency, they can quickly recognize and recall letter names.

The reading research often mixes up the concepts of identifying letter names versus identifying letter sounds. Many strong literacy programs focus on letter sounds first and letter names second. However, if your children are required to take assessments like the DIBELs, you want to make sure they are setup for success. So, you’ll need to teach them letter names even if your focus is on letter sounds. It is helpful for them to know both!

Practical Strategies for the Classroom

Join us for our third video of the Crack-the-Code series as our literacy expert explores the concept of letter naming automaticity and its role in developing letter sound knowledge. Jenny will share practical classroom strategies to seamlessly integrate letter naming fluency exercises into daily lessons, creating a supportive learning environment where students can flourish.

Continue following our literacy journey on YouTube and LinkedIn for more insights and tips on supporting young learners. Together, let's foster a love for reading and empower every student to be a game-changer in this world.

Thank you so much for this! One thing I have learned about this Dibels task is that it DOESN”T connect to anything else. In fact, it is hard to teach because it is more a test of Rapid name fluency. Truly, for DIBELS, it could be anything (number, colors etc) But Dibels has decided on letter names.
From what I have read Dibels is also a test that only MAPS to reading level, the skills themselves are not all necessary for reading, but they took scores from kids and normed them to reading levels rather than the test itself being all the things required for reading.
